Digital fluency and/or careers using computers
Identify with structurally or historically majority/dominant populations in the outdoor activity community
This September we had the honor to serve as basecamp for A Gathering in the Woods - a community event put on by the Brave Space Project, a multi-racial, women-led, radically collaborative creative team seeking to decolonize outdoor culture both in front of and behind the lens. We want to share how this happened and what we hope to grow from this experience.

A cool chill began to settle into the Tumwater Valley and Jon and I worked quickly to move brick pavers from the hefty pallets into the center of our geodesic “geo” dome. 110ish days into our project and our vision was finally becoming reality. We built a space that not only would grow our food, but would plant the first seeds of discussing what makes something wild and why it is important to preserve.
These first wilderness conversations took place a few days later. Nine women from the social justice, outdoor, non-profit, education, and federal fields converged on our property to participate in an interactive weekend of “collective envisioning”. The focus - to talk about women and the wilderness.

What we found was something beyond a wild place. We gained a deeper sense of ourselves and how much larger our world is outside of our developed community. We fell in love – not only with each other, but with the wild.
