<image:caption>Basecamp Cascadia is an outdoor community space for all*. We facilitate wild, immersive adventures of self-discovery in nature, to inspire the next generation of exemplars of environmental care. IMPORTANT UPDATE: Basecamp Cascadia is pausing all on-site programming while we work with the County to demonstrate our eligibility to continue our mission on-site. In the meantime, please check back for updates on off-site programs and subscribe to our newsletter.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - How we work</image:title>
<image:caption>Connect to and share the land. All of our programs include education of the history of our land and meals prepared with local food foraged or farmed in our area. Collaborate with community. In some cases, we have the skills to facilitate experiences. In other cases, we lack the skills or networks, and we open our space to other like-minded organizations to utilize as their own. Care for our planet. Each program offers a community science or environmental conservation component. Our goal is for participants to leave Basecamp with deeper knowledge of their connection to our Earth—inspiring them to become exemplars of environmental care in their communities. Create a physically and emotionally safe space. If you don’t feel safe, you can’t have fun. If you are safe, feel that you belong, connect to the land, and connect with others—joy is inevitable. This ethos enables us to truly welcome diverse audiences, and de-segregate our outdoor spaces.</image:caption>

We set a welcoming and refreshing tone for the long weekend together. From a personalized assessment that we directly applied to a Posture and Injury Prevention workshop, learning from professional trail runners about nutrition and training plans, to learning to plan and plot routes through the wild places surrounding each of our homes, this program has it all.</image:caption>

<image:title>Run into the Wild - Anna Breen "Breen" (She/Her), Instructor</image:title>
<image:caption>Anna is an outdoor enthusiast, traveler, and eater who works as an ER nurse to fund her many pursuits in life. She lives in Willow, AK with her fiancee and dog. She spends most of her time with her loved ones mountain running, working out, cooking, and gardening. She is a dabbler who finds many things in this world to be exciting; listening to music, berry picking, reading, mushroom foraging, traveling, hunting, fine dining, fishing, dancing, canning/preserving, beekeeping, etc. Prior to becoming a nurse, she completed an undergrad in Therapeutic Rec, did agronomy research for a grad school program that she chose to leave, and studied overseas for a few years. She has worked as a landscaper, stone mason, sommelier, wilderness therapy guide, hotshot wildland firefighter, summer camp facilitator, ranch hand, medical scribe, and more. Anna stumbled across Basecamp’s RCI in 2021 on the recommendation of a friend and adored the entire experience so much she begged Katie and Jon to let her hang out more.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Katie has spent over a decade adventure trail running across the West Coast, some of her favorites have been when they have been spur-of-the-moment with her female adventure counter-parts. Run into the Wild was planted as Basecamp Cascadia’s first program, and she now leads the logistics to help expand the program’s reach to more of the greater community’s female-identifying trail runners! Her favorite part has been transforming running from simply a recreational hobby to one that builds community and connects more people to nature.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Run into the Wild - Our Story</image:title>
<image:caption>At age 9 and 10, Katie and Ella met in Cabin 4 at YMCA Camp Dudley, surrounded by the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in Washington. The towering trees of the Pacific Northwest and the surrounding snow-capped peaks planted the seed for their love for the outdoors. Twenty-four years later, that seed has flourished. Motivated by their own wilderness adventures ranging from a circumnavigation of Mount Rainier on the Wonderland Trail, a sunrise summit of Mount Whitney, completing the Gannett Peak Project to raise awareness of public lands, rafting the Tatshenshini-Alsek, and a rim to rim to rim trail run through the Grand Canyon, Katie and Ella hope to inspire more women to connect to wild places and help them develop the skills and experience to do it.</image:caption>

The afternoon/evening will brim with unstructured chilling, lawn games, and the one pre-race task of making yourself a nametag at the art table. <image:caption>ACTIVIST. I was born in San Diego, CA and raised in Washington State. I have always had a connection with nature, and found a consistent love for the outdoors more recently. After meeting my husband we decided to marry and settle down in his home mountain town in North Central Washington. Currently a mother of two kids on a mission to create a better more inclusive world for them. We go hiking and camping and try and spend at least 30 minutes outside each day. Lastly I use solo hiking and trail running to balance my own personal mental health and wellness. https://shecolorsnature.com/</image:caption>

<image:caption>Christina Aragon is a PhD student and graduate fellow at Oregon State University, where her research focuses on alpine snow and snow-derived water resources. She is particularly interested in understanding the ways in which snow dynamically links together human, ecological, and hydrological systems in a changing climate. Her prior research focused on large-scale meteorology related to extreme precipitation over the Pacific Northwest, climate model evaluation, and projected changes in freezing levels. She is very excited to be part of Community Snow Observations and guiding a grassroots movement of citizen scientists. She draws from years of backcountry experience assessing avalanche conditions and riding big mountains.</image:caption>

<image:title>Paddle into the Wild - Increase female and non-binary identifying paddlers.</image:title>
<image:caption>This year we will offer two sections of Paddle into the Wild to the public, with an emphasis on 50% of the spots in each section being held for female and non-binary identifying paddlers. Why we are focusing on female and non-binary identifying paddlers: In whitewater paddling, diverse gender representation is lagging [way] behind, based on the fact that one of the premier whitewater kayaking competitions in the world finally added a women's category as recently as 2019 and there is still a large gender gap in the sport. To help in the effort to grow a paddling community that is more diverse and build support among these paddlers, we are putting a special emphasis on saving half our slots for female and non-binary identifying paddlers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Paddle into the Wild - More feedback from past participants</image:title>
<image:caption>“I really appreciated all of the feedback and encouragement. When I swam, the response was “nice recovery,” and “love the commitment!” “I’ve pretty much just always jumped onto trips that I’ve been invited on from others and just make my way through the more difficult sections and learn every time, but by really focusing on stuff below my level and challenging myself in creative ways I feel I can learn a lot faster. So thank you for that.” “This program exceeded my expectations enormously- and my expectations were high to start! I feel that I learned and grew more in 4 days than I have in any other educational- training experience due to the instructors intentionality, level of training, course content, and opportunities for practicing. The setting was also ideal and I appreciate everyone on staff working to inspire constant connections to the landscape and local communities. I will be recommending this course to many, many friends. PITW may need another session next year.” “Loved seeing an empowered woman instructor. Met me where I was emotionally. Didn’t make me feel bad about freaking out before the swim on Saturday. Encouraging and awesome!”</image:caption>

<image:title>Paddle into the Wild - Our Teaching Philosophy</image:title>
<image:caption>Enable: The course not only covers all the paddling fundamentals you would expect, it includes tools, resources, and expert coaching to plan your own expeditions. Inspire: Be inspired to grow your own paddling and adventure pursuits with a built-in fireside chat with your packraft instructor team during the three-day immersive course. Create a sense of place: Build community with your fellow paddlers through group on-river and off-river activities, as well as connection to the rivers we get to paddle by learning how we can give back to these special ecosystems through community science. Forge adventure partnerships: The course is only the beginning. Participants will come away with their own expedition plan for the year and a roster of potential compatriots. Start safely: We want packrafting culture to prioritize physical and emotional safety. This means students make their own choices to take on physical challenges, and the community welcomes everyone to the sport regardless of their identity, background, or ability.</image:caption>

He is Wilderness First Responder, ACA Whitewater Level 4 Instructor, AIARE Pro 1, and swiftwater rescue certified.</image:caption>

<image:caption>ELLA NUTTLEMAN - BOARD PRESIDENT; OUTDOOR EDUCATOR & PROGRAM COORDINATOR Ella joined Katie to host the 2019 Women in the Wild Retreat at Basecamp Cascadia where Run into the Wild was born. She helped establish key partners for Run into the Wild and supported the organization in program development. Her background is in therapeutic and outdoor recreation. She has a degree from Western Washington University in Recreation and Leisure Studies, and over 10 years of experience working for various outdoor education programs. She seeks to inspire curiosity and passion, strives to empower individuals to develop the necessary skills to feel competent in an outdoor setting, and aims to transfer the lessons and experiences they have outside to their everyday lives. Currently residing in Boulder, CO, she dedicates most of her time towards building a cabin in the woods with her husband Charlie, that brings her closer to the mountains and her natural habitat!</image:caption>

<image:caption>KATIE STRAHL – EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Katie is the founder of Basecamp Cascadia. This organization was born in the wilds of southeast Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, where she worked as an Environmental Protection Specialist. Her vision was to create an organization that could provide a space that offers tools and community to enable more folks to cultivate their own wilderness connection. Katie spent close to a decade working directly and indirectly for our public lands. She carries a MPA in Environmental Policy from the University of Washington Evans School of Public Policy, is a Wilderness Management Scholar through University of Montana, and is currently completing the Avalanche Educator Track through the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education. She has found that her true spark comes to life when she connects people to the backcountry through adventure and self-discovery. When she is not building (physically or figuratively) Basecamp Cascadia, you will likely find her exploring her own backyard in some human-powered way accompanied with her adventure crew - Jon + Pondo!</image:caption>

After experiencing the leadership and resilience that is at the heart of Basecamp Cascadia while co-leading its first-ever program, Run Into the Wild, Chelsea knew she wanted to be a part of their mission for the long-haul and is very excited to be jumping on board to help develop and coordinate future programs, as well as continue to lead program activities when she can. Chelsea is passionate about science communication and fostering understanding of our connections to natural systems, from a vast mountain wilderness to a microscopic ocean world of wonder. She is pursing her PhD in Environmental Sciences with a focus on Free-Choice Learning. When she's not exploring or playing in the salty sea, she's be-bopping around the Pacific Northwest in a camper with her favorite white-water kayaker, pit-stopping along the way to survey the landscape by mountain bike.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ponderosa Fund - A fund to increase access to outdoor programs.</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspired by the 200+ year old Ponderosa Pine that overlooks Basecamp & models the power of what you can grow given adequate resources, as well as Sarah Histand’s “Sisterly Support” Program (a program to help take off the weight for those carrying a lot right now). We have started this fund to help folks grow in their outdoor recreational pursuits by reducing the cost to entry. This fund is geared for folks, especially those underrepresented in the outdoors, who would like to access a program, but don’t have the financial means to do so at this time. This fund is here to make it an option. Please reach out to us today if your interested in attending a program and want to utilize the Ponderosa Fund!</image:caption>
